UK grants paternity leave
Who stays home with a new baby? Mum? Dad? The United Kingdom thinks both parents should have the choice. In January, the UK announced that the father of a new baby is en-
titled to up to six months of paternity leave if
the mother returns to work. The measure aug- ments Britain’s current policy of nine months of paid maternity leave. A father can receive three months of paid paternity leave (at £123 per week) to replace the last three months of the mother’s leave, and can then take an additional three months of unpaid leave after that. The new measure enables women to
return to work sooner, and recognizes that
fathers want and need to spend more time with their babies. Current British law states that a father is entitled to two weeks of paternity leave when the child is born. That policy will continue, in addition to the new leave time.

by Simone Schnall et al., published in the January 2010 online version of Psychological Science, explores how elevation motivates charitable deeds. Researchers defi ned elevation as a “positive emotion experienced upon witnessing another person perform a virtuous act.” In the two-part study, participants were
more motivated to help researchers after watching an uplifting clip from The Oprah Winfrey Show, featuring musicians thanking their mentors, than after watching neutral or humorous fi lm and television clips. For more information, see the study at http://pss.
