How refreshing to read a women’s magazine that actually makes me feel better and not worse about myself! It’s also a testament to your ethics and values that you don’t do busi- ness with formula companies. One thing: I’d love to see more diversity in

the pictures you print, particularly of nursing moms and their babies. I’m a breastfeeding peer counselor at a Women, Infants, and Chil- dren (WIC) office in Florida. One of our goals is to encourage and normalize breastfeeding in the black urban culture, where breastfeeding rates are well below that of the general popu- lation. While cutting out pictures of nurslings for a collage, I noticed that all of the pictures of nursing moms—reader pictures, those in ads, and those featured in stories—were of white folk. Breastfeeding is so often depicted as something white elites do. It’d be great if Mothering could do its part to change that.

C A R R Y ING ON

Thank you for being a constant point of reference throughout the learning process of being a mother. Your writings on breastfeed- ing, cosleeping, and attachment parenting support me, and provide proof, when I need it, that my own maternal instinct is better than any unsolicited advice. I thought you would enjoy this picture of my two-year-old son, Lewis, who wears his baby just as my husband and I wore him: proof that the abil- ity to nurture can, well, be nurtured!

One of my favorite things about Mothering is the beautiful photos of breastfeeding that you publish. (I read your magazine while pumping at work, and it really helps!) I especially like the photos of moms nursing
