ATHLETICS Eric Hogue, William Jessup’s Chief Development Officer states, “Our

baseball team is excited about the opportunity to play in a first-class facility that we helped renovate. It will create an enthusiastic WJU fan base in Lincoln. William Jessup will help fund a state-of-the-art infield, hold baseball camps that will feature former Major League manager Jerry Manuel, and all the concessions from our games will go to the Lincoln Little League. The city will certainly benefit from an economic standpoint; visiting teams and their fans will stay in nearby hotels and eat locally. This is a great example of a public/private part- nership of success.” The 10-year agreement specifies that William Jessup baseball will

have priority use of the field during seasonal play. The move gives the University additional time to raise funds to build a baseball stadium on the north end of the 125-acre campus, near the newly opened University Avenue in Rocklin. The joint effort to improve the field is currently in design phase with work slated to begin after the first of the year. McBean Park is a 24-acre park, featuring a swimming pool, senior

baseball field, Little League diamond, Skate Park, the “Leathers” play- ground, outdoor basketball courts, horseshoe pits, football/baseball stadium, picnic areas, and open-turf areas. McBean also bears unique historical significance for Lincoln as

it was established in 1925. The Stadium got its roots at the end of World War II when a group of workers from the Gladding-McBean Clay Works Factory formed a league known as the Placer-Nevada Baseball League. Eight teams comprised the league and the Lincoln

Potters played home games at what was considered “the best field in the league for featuring groomed grass, grandstands and lights.” The first nighttime baseball game was played on August 10, sixty years ago. Speaking to this history, Lincoln City Manager Matt Brower stated,

“For more than a century, baseball has been labeled the ‘National Pas- time.’ The Council’s recent approval of a 10-year agreement with WJU will result in the nation’s pastime returning to Lincoln after nearly a 40-year absence.” The community has already rallied with Friends of McBean Stadium “planning to raise funds to renovate off-field amenities, such as the stands, concession area, sound system, and potentially a press box,” according to the Lincoln Messenger. Friends of McBean Stadium vice-president Roger Ueltzen, who is

also the Lincoln parks and recreation committee chairman, calls this agreement “a major step forward.” What started as a WJU initiative has knocked the ball out of the

park on every level, influencing Placer County history, Jessup’s local community, regional economy, area families, and of course #JessupBaseball. Join WJU and the communities of Lincoln, Roseville, Rocklin, and others across Northern California this fall as we throw out the first pitch.
