ameter) that can do both part surface scanning and perform touch functions for part positioning. This year, it will present the WRSP60 wireless solution at IMTS. The G25 hardwired scanning technology released in 2014 is used for contact scanning for pre- and post-process cycles on gear grinders and machining centers. It facilitates rework- ing while parts are still fixtured in the machine. When used for gear grinding, the G25 gage identifies the part location and tooth spacing for purposes of aligning the part with the grind- ing wheel prior to grinding. The same device is then used to scan the profile of the finished part in a continuous cycle, and inspection time drops compared to using a touch probe. The G25/ WRSP60 gauge can also be used in the grind- ing of nonround parts where the user needs to check certain characteristics of the part after it is ground and for verifying that a face of the part is in the right orientation. “The concept there is we are using a gauge-world prod- uct in a CNC,” Mundra said. “We are presenting the WRSP60 at IMTS and we’re look- ing for more partners at the OEM level,” Mundra said. Uses of the scanner are unlimited, he said. “We believe it could be used in lathes. For circularity, roundness along with size measurements. It could be used in a file access for data col- lection while scanning your parts.” Gear manufactures and grinding will benefit. “They can adjust and process the grinding wheel to get the right profile if there’s a mistake,” he said.


“This is a scanner on a CMM versus a touch probe on a CMM,” Mundra said. “With a touch probe, you’re limited. With a scanner, you can scan all the parts much faster. This


is a one-axis scanner. It is not a three axis. It can work in the XY plane or the YZ plane; it doesn’t work in the XYZ.”


Being Device-Neutral Helps Another trend is device-neutral solutions, said Kevin Kelly,


sales director at MicroRidge Systems Inc., which focuses squarely on measurement collection. “We are an any-gage-into-any-software solution provider.


We are one of the few in the wireless industry that is make- and model-neutral. Most of the people in the market have a system for their products only.” As a result, “clients are referred to us sometimes by our competitors,” he said. “Because they have picked up a gage that the manufacturer knows it cannot hook up to through their systems.”
