precision requirements are each day pushed to the existing limits, Marposs will introduce a new line of ultra-precision machine tool touch probes and tool setters in Chicago. The fi rm calls it the Diamond line—named so because diamond cutting is known as a very precise process that yields stunning accuracy. The Diamond line is a subset of the Mida probes line.


“When you do the right cuts on the diamond, you got the right solutions,” Mundra added. “The same thing with the right product, you have the right solution” in manufacturing. Marposs developed the Diamond line to help in controlling


the production process in all its phases: workpiece setup and inspection and tool presetting and control. The high-precision products are meant for any application or industry that re- quires high-accuracy controls on very complex surfaces. In the Diamond line, Marposs’s Mida Visual Tool Setter (VTS), which made its debut a year ago, has seen “a lot more development” in the last year, he said. In that time, Marposs reduced the overall width of the VTS unit to 200 from 300 mm, to make it fi t on most machines. “So we now have two styles of VTSs: The VTS HS [high-resolution, small size] and the VTS HC [high-resolution, compact size],” Mundra said.


Makino customers are getting the advantage of using the VTS because of its superb accuracy and insensitivity to tool dimensions and tool geometry. Hundreds of the VTS HS are on the market. And the com- pact version will be released at IMTS as a new product, he said. Also in the Diamond line, Marposs will release at IMTS several versions of its Mida Diamond Touch Probes for part checks. The probes are available with various transmission methods, including wired transmission, optical transmission and radio transmission. The optical version came out about six months ago. And the fi rm is putting the complete piezo- electric solution on display for the fi rst time at IMTS. With the Diamond line of touch probes, Marposs has


replaced the internal mechanical switch with a piezoelectric sys- tem. The “piezoelectric effect” is the ability of some materials to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress. The word piezoelectric is derived from piezein, which is Greek for squeeze or press, and piezo, which is Greek for push. “When you are using a piezo sensor, the moment you touch


the part, it’s like a crash which is happening and the sensor detects it as a trigger,” Mundra said. “The advantage of this technology is you can now run probing at very fast rates. You’re not limited to fi ve or 10 ipm; you can go at 100 or 150 ipm.” The upshot: “It reduces cycle time to the bare minimum,” he said.


Marposs just did a study for Gunite, maker of wheel hubs, Mudra noted. Gunite was taking 12–15 minutes to measure a dozen holes in a hub. “We reduced it to two-and-a-half minutes using the new piezo probe.”


Makino has beta tested the product, which has also had runs at Okuma and Methods. “And we were able to run it at 200 ipm and record data within 2 to 3 µm.”


The VOP40p Diamond optical probe provides a high-precision solution for small-to-medium size machining centers and milling machines. Battery life of up to 270 days can be obtained with a 5% time usage in the low-power mode.


Makino is using the VTS on its IQ 300 machine. “It is a


simple precise vertical machining center” that Makino is using to measure the length and diameter of the tool—within less than a micron.


“The accuracy of the machine is half a micron,” Mundra added. “And the accuracy of the VTS is 0.2 µm.”

The piezo is a full 360° probe. “So you can do all kinds of profi les and you don’t have to cali- brate again and again,” Mundra said. “You can go vertical or horizontal with the same probe and the same calibration.” This probe will be used in aerospace and auto- motive, as well as other industries that manufacture free-form shapes that must be closely inspected.


It is coming in handy in the automotive world, “where you just want to set a part position, but you don’t have time,” he said. “Now, I can go with a fast probe and what used to take 10 seconds can be reduced to three or four seconds.”
