Why we celebrate cooperatives
E
very October, coopera ves from all sectors across the country celebrate Na onal
Coopera ve Month. The purpose of this annual celebra on is to recognize the coopera ve diff erence and remind you, the members of the co-op, about Northeast Oklahoma Electric’s purpose.
I must admit that occasionally, I have been somewhat cynical of the many diff erent “days” and “months” that are celebrated, but Na onal Coopera ve Month is truly an opportunity to celebrate.
Cindy Hefner Manager of Public Rela ons
Celebra ng Na onal Coopera ve Month informs others about our unique business model, which is based on the Seven Coopera ve Principles: Voluntary and Open Membership; Democra c Member Control; Members’ Economic Par cipa on; Autonomy and Independence; Educa on, Training and Informa on; Coopera on Among Coopera ves; and Concern for Community.
For co-op employees and members that are familiar with the principles, the month of October is a great opportunity to renew our connec on to each other and the purpose of our co-op.
Northeast Oklahoma Electric Coopera ve, Inc., is a member- owned business that delivers compe vely-priced electric power and works to improve our members’ quality of life.
In the U.S., there are more than 29,000 co-ops serving in every single industry. Many co-ops from diff erent sectors join together during the month of October to educate members in the community about coopera ves.
There are more co-ops in our local community than most people realize— agricultural co-ops, food co-ops, credit unions, even Ace Hardware. Co-ops are even represented on the shelves at our local grocery stores, such as Land O’Lakes, Welch’s, Organic Valley, Cabot Cheese, Sunkist, Ocean Spray and many more.
According to the latest data, more than 130 million people belong to a co- op in the U.S. alone, and co-ops employ more than 2 million Americans.
This speaks to the heart of why we must take every opportunity to celebrate and teach others about the coopera ve business model. So, plan your own co-op celebra on by purchasing co-op products, look to do business with co-ops right here in our local community and be an ac ve member of Northeast Oklahoma Electric.
Northeast Connection is published monthly to communicate with the members of Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative.
