Linemen offer life-saving assistance after car accident Annual Meeting Highlights - Page 3

Wednesday, Sept. 7, began as a

routine morning for VVEC linemen Roger Salisbury and Ricky Rimpley. But it soon became anything but ordinary.

The linemen were driving to a job site on State Highway 88 near Claremore when they came across a head-on collision. According to the Oklahoma High- way Patrol report, the two auto- mobiles crashed after one of them crossed the center-line. The oncom- ing vehicle swerved to avoid it, but the two cars collided. Salisbury and Rimpley were able to use some of the equipment in their truck to offer assistance until emergency responders arrived on the scene. “We could see flames coming up

from underneath the hood of the car and we went and got our fire extin- guishers,” Salisbury said. Rimpley extinguished a fire under the hood of one of the vehicles while Salisbury used pliers to cut the wires on a smoking fan in the other. They were able to keep the conscious driver calm until help arrived. The drivers of both vehicles

were hospitalized with injuries, but survived—thanks to Salisbury and Rimpley’s quick response. “When we got there, we could tell someone extinguished a fire and noticed it began to flare up again when we began extricating the driver,” said Capt. Mat Shockley,

interim chief of the Northwest Rog- ers County Fire Protection District. “They (Salisbury and Rimpley) are the ones who allowed these two to be saved. Had they not put that fire out, the car would have been totally engulfed in flames.” Salisbury and Rimpley received letters of recognition from State Rep. Markwayne Mullin in apprecia- tion for their life-saving efforts.

“It is overwhelming knowing we saved those girls. It’s not something you encounter on a daily basis,” Rimpley said. “Being able to for- tunately be in that situation at that time and having the equipment on our vehicle to help, is a great feeling to know we were hopefully able to turn something tragic into some- thing that’s just a very bad incident instead of something fatal.”
