Add Some Electrical Jobs To Your Spring Cleaning List

A

s if your spring-cleaning checklist weren’t already long enough, here are a few items to add:

• While you’re cleaning the windows, check for loose or cracked glass panes and for peeling, old caulk around the frames. Either one is a path for your air- conditioned air to escape to the outdoors and for cold winter air and hot summer air to waft into the house and compete with the furnace and a/c. Replace broken windows and caulking that’s past its prime.

• Compact fluorescent light bulbs and LED light fixtures last a lot longer than the traditional, incandescent bulbs everybody grew up with. Instead of replacing them regularly, start dusting them. Use a soft cloth to remove excess dust that could leave the light looking dim. And if you happen upon any old incandescents while you’re cleaning, replace them with high-efficiency CFLs or LEDs.

• Before the start of air conditioning season, replace your system’s dirty air filter. Then, replace it again every month during cooling system to help your HVAC run as efficiently as possible.

• Pull your refrigerator away from the wall once a year and vacuum behind it. Dust built-up under and behind the unit can decrease its efficiency.

• Check the utility closet or basement and move boxes and other items so they’re five feet away from your furnace and water heater. Appliances need air to circulate around them; don’t block it. While you’re there, remove old cans of paint, turpentine, gasoline, and other chemicals and debris from the vicinity of your furnace. Any of those items can heat up and catch fire or explode if they get too close.

DIRECTIONS
