organic matter. Shredded leaves, compost, shredded bark and pecan hulls all make excellent degradable mulch. Mulch and compost are ideal for holding water in the soil and keeping

roots cool. ✓ Choose the right plant for the right spot and read plant tags with a practiced eye. In Oklahoma, we have relentless sun and heat. If a tag states the plant needs partial shade, it probably needs nearly full shade here. Even sun lovers can use a little bit of shade. If you have any doubt about a plant, try it on the east side of the house where it will only get morning sun. ✓ Use more native plants. By native, I mean those that are native to similar conditions as those presented in your garden. For example, Chilopsis linearis, desert willow, is native to parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Although not native to Oklahoma, it is still a wonderful and tough plant for western and central Oklahoma. ✓ Plant long-blooming summer perennials like salvias, includ- ing S. greggii ‘Pink Preference,’ Gaura lindheimeri, butterfl y gaura, asters and Caryopteris, bluebeard. Try hardy shrubs like Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ or H. quercifolia ‘Ruby Slippers’ instead of traditional H. macrophylla, mophead hy- drangeas, because the former are more tolerant of heat and drought. Also, grow tropical plants for summer foliage even

when nothing is in bloom. Consider coleus, alternantheras, duranta and others. ✓ Grow ornamental grasses. They are drought tolerant and add movement and sound to the garden. Plus, their softness plays well against larger garden leaves. Look for native switch grasses like Panicum virgatum ‘Dallas Blues,’ ‘Cheyenne Skies’ or ‘Northwind.’ Maiden grass is another good choice as is feather reed grass. Most of these also turn beautiful shades of gold or rust as they move the garden from summer into fall. ✓ Recognize that no matter how excellent your care, some plants are not going to thrive and may even die. Remove these slackers and plant something more drought tolerant and easy-going in their place.

Oklahoma’s climate isn’t easy, but it is interesting and beau- tiful just like its people. Try these tips and create a beautiful garden even when our climate refuses to cooperate.
