Power Costs Going Down In 2015 Energy saving programs pay off in lower demand costs for KEC
t's no April Fool's prank: Kiamichi Electric members could pay less for power purchased from the generation plant this year, thanks to the co-op's concerted efforts to encourage members to use less electricity during peak usage periods, and to increase the energy efficiency of their homes year round.

This is good news for members who are witnessing the effects of new power plant regulations in the upward climb of the power cost adjustment on their monthly electric bill.

As environmental regulations continue to raise the cost to generate electricity, finding ways to curb KEC's system-wide demand is priority one for the co-op.
"Over the last several years, Kiamichi Electric has worked hard to increase our members' energy use awareness, and we've put programs in place to help them," Jackson said.
Kiamichi Electric Cooperative (KEC) will save approximately $321,000 this year due to a decrease in system-wide electricity demand. Demand is electric utility jargon for the amount of electricity used throughout a utility system for a specific period. The cost of wholesale power from a generation plant is based partly on a utility's system-wide demand.
“The demand charge to Kiamichi Electric, which is then passed on to the members, is between 25 and 30 percent of the total power costs," Jackson explained. "The good news is demand can be somewhat controlled. When that happens, our wholesale power costs go down, which in turn keeps our member's energy bills lower."

KEC's geothermal program drastically reduces the cost to install a geothermal heat pump, making the choice to go geothermal more affordable for members. KEC's partnership with Energy Pioneer Solutions offers free home energy audits for members, and no obligation financing to make suggested energy saving improvements. These programs are playing a role in lowering KEC's system- wide energy use.
"The reduction in demand is a huge accomplishment for us, and we want to keep moving in a cost saving direction," Jackson emphasized.
Virtually all electric industry outlook projections expect wholesale electricity prices to rise. With that in mind, KEC is doing what it can to help members control costs by making their homes as efficient as possible.
