inside your co-op Technology Tackles Power Outages

If you've lived through a major power outage, you understand all too well that "in the dark" feeling. You know crews are working to restore power, but you have no idea if they are making progress or when your power will be back on.

Improving communications with members during a major outage is just one of the anticipated advantages of Kiamichi Electric Cooperative's new outage management system. Installed in March, the system is currenty undergoing field testing. Employee training on the new system will be ongoing.

Outage management system will correspond with Kiamichi Electric's current systems in real time, inputting information from KEC's automated meters, interactive voice recording (IVR), customer information and SCADA to provide co-op employees, and eventually members, with dependable, up-to-date outage information.

outage more quickly, and dispatch crews more efficiently. Using an electronic outage map, employees can easily track outage reports and view restoration progress in real time. The map will also track the location of all co-op crews.

"We expect this system to be a tremendous help to us particularly during large scale outages," Veerkamp said."It will provide more timely information to all co-op employees and our members."

Eventually, members will be able to log on to KEC's website to view the live outage map. They'll be able to report outages using our mobile app, too," said Veerkamp. "That means less time on the phones and fewer busy signals. They can report an outage via text message or using their tablet or PC. They won't have to remember our phone number, they can just log on to the app and go!""
