selfl ess, and—through love and sacrifi ce—have made a difference in my life. For these individuals, I have the utmost respect and admiration. They are people who go above the call of duty; their love knows no bounds and their priority is not to look after their own interests, but instead to look after the best in- terest of others. I’m certain you can name someone who is—or has been—a difference maker in your life. In the electric cooperative family, our linemen are ones who impact, infl uence and inspire not only co-op leaders and employees, but also the countless member-owners they serve each day. To be honest, they’re unsung heroes, putting their lives on the line each day in what could be life-threatening condi- tions to keep the lights on. To recognize these he- roes, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association recently passed a resolution designating the second Monday of April “National Lineman Appreciation Day.” This year, it will fall on April 13, 2015. Although deserving of a day of recognition, this acknowledgment of linemen’s service should last all year long. In this industry, they are admired for the sacrifi ces they make. To linemen, line work is not merely a job; it’s a way of life. They don’t do it with the sole purpose of receiving a paycheck; they put their lives on the line because they are passionate for what they do. They know their job is not an 8-to-5 job; they know their families will pay a price on missed birth- days, family occasions and holidays. Still, they go about their mission each day to provide families with a basic necessity: electric power. They do this despite trying work conditions, including treacher- ous roads, ice storms and freezing rain, or working in the eerie hours of the night. Simply put, they do it because they have accepted a call to serve. To Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives’ 1,100-plus linemen, “thank you” for your self-giving, dedicated service to keeping our lights on. Each day, you im- pact, infl uence and inspire consumer-members at the end of the line. On April 13, and every day, be sure to thank a lineman!
