Principal and Vice-Chancellor’s Review
DEVELOPING INTERNATIONALISATION
The University has been recognised for its global input and international standing in two key league tables. The THE World University Rankings which provides the definitive list of the world’s best universities placed Heriot-Watt 46th in the world,17th in the UK and 2nd in Scotland for its international outlook, while the QS World University Rankings, which place the world’s top 600 universities based on four key areas: research, teaching, graduate employability and internationalisation, saw Heriot-Watt rise to 318th in the world, up 34 places. In addition, the University rose 13 places to 34th in the QS ‘Top 50 under 50’ World Rankings. These are impressive results which clearly demonstrate that the focus on developing internationalisation is yielding results.
One of our key objectives will be to consolidate this reputation further, developing Heriot-Watt into a truly integrated global institution. Our international campuses continue to grow and our worldwide partnerships are strengthening and deepening, and I see significant opportunities to further develop our reach and impact through our research, graduates and by engaging our global alumni and civic communities.
ENABLING STRATEGIES
I am delighted to join the University as it receives its first School-level Athena SWAN award. The spirit of Athena SWAN is to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace so that the best research and education can be delivered. This new award for the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is a great result and a solid marker that we are on the right path.
It is also exciting to see progress being made on Oriam, the new Sports Performance Centre which will provide Heriot-Watt with a unique opportunity to work directly with athletes, coaches, medical professionals and National Governing Bodies as well as developing sport and physical activity opportunities for students and staff. The other major academic facility that will be completed in 2016 is our Lyell Centre that brings together the British Geological Survey (Scotland) and our earth, marine and life scientists, theoreticians and engineers. Both are currently on track for opening on time.
I would like to thank Professor Julian Jones who has led the University for the majority of 2015 as Acting Principal and Vice-Chancellor with the support of the Management Board and University Court. I very much look forward to building on the year’s success in 2016.
One of our key objectives will be to develop Heriot-Watt University into a truly integrated global institution
