INNOVATION IN LEARNING AND TEACHING
The University supports a range of learning and teaching enhancement projects, currently focused on the theme of ‘Student Transitions’. These collaborative, interdisciplinary projects aim to pilot innovative work in enhancing learning and teaching and improve the student experience by supporting learning transitions.
This year’s Learning and Teaching Symposium 2015 showcased a wide variety of projects including peer support activities to help new students transition into university; work to help 1st Year Computer Science students become independent learners through automated feedback; student- led virtual guides of key areas in Mechanical and Chemical Engineering; and a British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter Repository providing an online database of BSL scenarios that can build students’ understanding and confidence by virtually exposing them to environments prior to working in them.
Professor John Sawkins, Deputy Principal (Learning and Teaching) commented: “We are ground breaking and sector leading in our approach to international activity in many ways. I am delighted that we have again secured the QAA Quality Mark, which indicates to UK and international students that we meet national requirements for standards and quality, demonstrating our commitment to providing and enhancing an excellent student experience.”
A very significant achievement during 2015, saw Heriot-Watt receive its best-ever Enhancement Led Institutional Review (ELIR) conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency (Scotland). Underlining the University’s commitment to providing a high quality student experience and effective management of academic standards, the Review highlighted a number of areas of positive practice. These included: the University’s flexible provision of learning opportunities where programmes are run in multiple locations across the globe and through multiple modes of study, enabling students to switch easily between different methods of study or locations; the embedded global ethos within the University’s culture and operational processes; and the constructive and effective partnership between the University and its Student Union.
