MALAYSIA CAMPUS OFFICIALLY OPENED
Heriot-Watt’s £35 million purpose- built campus in Malaysia was officially opened by Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Education II in the Malaysian Government and Her Excellency Vicki Treadell CMG MVO, British High Commissioner to Malaysia. The opening marked a significant achievement in the University’s drive to deliver global education of exceptional quality. The innovative Malaysia Campus has been designed to provide an excellent learning environment that will develop highly employable graduates through a portfolio of programmes tailored to the Malaysian’s government’s plan for economic growth and development in the region.
Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh, commented: “The welcoming of international campuses, such as Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, falls in line with the aims of the Higher Education Blueprint which will allow Malaysia to compete with the growing global education landscape over the next 10 years. The presence of Heriot- Watt University Malaysia will certainly increase competition and the choice of quality education in Malaysia.”
Vicki Treadall added: “Malaysia is emerging as the largest market for the provision of UK transnational higher education. The opening of the Heriot-Watt University campus in Putrajaya marks another milestone in UK-Malaysia education ties, and will support Malaysia’s efforts in becoming an education hub in the region.”
NEW ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES
Dr Melanie Ooi, a leading academic and engineer, was appointed as an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, based on the Malaysia Campus. Dr Ooi is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Chartered Engineer who has won numerous awards for her teaching and research. Her innovative education programmes, delivered in partnership with industry, have helped to increase the work-readiness and engineering skills of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, while her research in electronics test technologies has developed a number of new testing standards which multinational industry partners including Intel, Freescale Semiconductor, Texas Instruments and Western Digital have adopted.
