Rise in Global Rankings
Heriot-Watt performed well in a number of leading league tables during 2015 In THE World
Top 50
Heriot-Watt’s strengths in industry- related research and international focus were recognised in the latest THE World University Rankings. These placed the University 5th in the UK, and 2nd only to St Andrews in Scotland, for industry income, based on the value of industry research income per member of academic staff. The rankings also placed Heriot-Watt 46th in the world for its international outlook, a score based on the percentage of the University’s international staff, the level of international co-authorship of academic papers and the percentage of international students studying here.
Rise in Times / Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016
Heriot-Watt’s position in the UK rose to 38th, out of 127 universities and 5th in Scotland, in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016. The Guide also placed the University in the top 20 in the UK for graduate salaries. It ranked five of the University’s subjects in the UK top 10: Building, Chemical Engineering, Art and Design (Textiles), Mechanical Engineering and General Engineering.

Up 34 Places
in QS International Rankings
The University’s global status was further underlined by its highest ever ranking in the QS World University Rankings, rising to 318th in the world, placing it in the top 4% in the world. QS ranks the world’s top 600 universities based on four key areas: research, teaching, graduate employability and internationalisation.
Top 20 ranking
in Guardian League Tables 2016
The Guardian University league tables ranked Heriot-Watt in the UK’s top 20 universities, placing it second in Scotland after St Andrews. Five academic subjects were ranked in the UK top five and 10 subjects in the top 20, including 2nd place for Civil Engineering and 3rd place for Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Accounting & Finance.

QS ‘Top 50 under 50’ World University Rankings
34th place, up from 47th last year. The rankings are compiled by taking the top 50 universities from the QS World University Rankings that have received university title in the last fifty years, and are designed to highlight the performance of universities in teaching and research which are all the more impressive given their age and resources.
Top 30
place in National Student Survey
The University rose 17 places for ‘overall satisfaction’ in the UK National Student Survey (NSS), placing it 28th in the UK and joint third (with St Andrews) in Scotland. Eighty nine per cent of Heriot-Watt’s final year, full-time degree students expressed overall satisfaction with their experience at the University. At subject area level the University ranked in the top ten UK universities for five subjects, and first or second in Scotland for 11 of its 21 subjects.
