NEW DESIGNER AWARD WINNERS
Talent coming out of the world- famous School of Textiles and Design made a big impact at the New Designers Awards in London during the year. Anja Alexandersdottir won the John Lewis Award for Design and Innovation and Louise Jenkins won the Worshipful Company of Weavers Associate Prize. The awards are made annually to coincide with the opening of two New Designers exhibitions which showcase the very best in recent graduate work.
ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERSHIP WITH GLENMORANGIE
An innovative initiative to address international environmental challenges has been created through a partnership between the Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology and global whisky distillers The Glenmorangie Company. The Dornoch Firth Environmental Enhancement Project (DEEP) will reconsider the standards for protected areas and also involves the Marine Conservation Society, reflecting the interests of the three institutions in the fields of marine environmental enhancement, mitigation and societal benefits.
Dr William Sanderson of Heriot-Watt and principal investigator on the project, explained: “The DEEP project will consolidate the evidence-base for environmental enhancement and build a practical platform to take ideas forward. Focused on the Dornoch Firth, it aims to support its marine environment and to minimise any environmental impact of the Glenmorangie distillery.”
Anja Alexandersdottir’s work received further recognition as one of 23 successful candidates chosen from over 200 from around the UK, to feature in an exhibition showing in London and Paris by TEXPRINT, an organisation which mentors and promotes the UK’s most talented textile design graduates.
