INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS AWARD FOR VICE PRINCIPAL


Professor Julian Jones, Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt, was one of two recipients of the 2015 Phillips Award for distinguished service to the Institute of Physics (IOP). The award is given annually for innovative ideas or activities that have made a major contribution to IOP objectives. Professor Jones, OBE, is a Fellow of the IOP, and honorary treasurer of the Institute. He is also a member of Council and has previously chaired the IOP’s Optics and Photonics Division, the Optical Group, the Institute of Physics in Scotland and the IOP’s Scottish Education Committee. He has been a member of the Institute’s Education Board and its External Affairs Committee and from 1992 to 1999 was editor of the IOP’s Journal of Measurement Science and Technology.

QUEEN HONOURS CHAIR OF COURT


Heriot-Watt’s Chair of Court was made a Dame of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Dame Frances Anne Cairncross, DBE, was awarded for services to education and in recognition of a very successful career as a leading British economist, journalist and academic.


Dame Frances was appointed as the new Chair of the University Court in January 2015. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSA) and a Senior Fellow at the School of Public Policy, UCLA. She chairs the Executive Committee of the Institute for Fiscal Studies and has a wealth of experience in higher education, the private sector and corporate boards.
