RESEARCH FUNDING REACHES PEAK
Reinforcing Heriot-Watt’s standing as a key partner with industry, business and government, 2015 saw the University achieve its highest-ever levels of research funding, receiving more than £40.6 million in the 2014/15 financial year. The results are particularly impressive in the current climate of reduced available funding.
The largest amount of funding came from UK Research Councils but industry support was also significant, responsible for £11.8 million of funding. A number of factors have contributed to this success and it reflects the University’s focused strategy to maximise research funding through key appointments and the formation of consortia with other leading institutions in order to capture larger grants.
Professor Duncan Hand, Deputy Principal, Research and Knowledge Exchange, commented: “The University has worked hard to ensure it achieves a high ratio of funding success to submitted proposals through mentoring, peer scrutiny and support, and the Industry investment we are receiving demonstrates the relevance of our research.
“Our focus on making a global impact through research activity has seen us become part of the UK wide Quantum Technology Hub Network where Heriot Watt has a significant involvement in two of the four hubs – those concerned with Quantum Communications and Quantum Sensing/Imaging. This work will exploit new technologies and bring game-changing advantages to future timing, sensing and navigation capabilities that could support multi- billion pound markets in the UK and globally. We are also leading work on the development of low-carbon aviation fuels through the integration of novel technologies for co-valorisation of carbon dioxide. Across the world the aviation industry needs to transition to a low carbon future and our work will make a significant contribution to how this can be achieved.”
