DUBAI CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY


Heriot-Watt University’s Dubai Campus has achieved outstanding growth as it celebrates its 10th anniversary in the UAE. The number of students at the University has grown substantially since it opened in 2005 from 120 students in 2005 to almost 4,000 from over 100 countries in 2015 making Heriot- Watt the fastest growing university campus in Dubai and the UAE.


The 10th anniversary was marked with a celebratory dinner at the Fairmont Hotel on the Palm Jumeirah hosted by Heriot-Watt University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard A Williams OBE FREng, and Professor Ammar Kaka, Vice-Principal and Head of the Dubai Campus.


Heriot-Watt University Principal and Vice- Chancellor, Professor Richard A Williams OBE FREng said; “This celebration not only marks Heriot-Watt University’s 10th anniversary in the United Arab Emirates but also demonstrates our appreciation for our team and partners in helping us to achieve significant milestones throughout the past ten years.”


INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP SIGNED AT DUBAI CAMPUS


The School of Management and Languages in Dubai signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi National Tanker Co (ADNATCO) and National Gas Shipping Company (NGSCO). Both companies are involved in transportation; ADNATCO of petroleum products including the bulk transportation of sulphur, and NGSCO transports liquefied natural gas. The agreement will see the School deliver training, consultancy and research-based services tailored to the needs of the companies while Heriot-Watt students will gain access to internships and a rich pool of data which can enhance their research.


Professor Ammar Kaka, Vice-Principal and Head of the Dubai Campus, who co-signed the agreement with Dr Ali Al-Yabhouni, Chief Executive Officer of ADNATCO and NGSCO, commented: “Mutually beneficial partnerships that are able to support our students in their ongoing quest for knowledge are very important to us. I believe students will find it extremely useful, and I’m pleased that together with ADNATCO and NGSCO we are able to offer these opportunities.”

Professor Wael Mualla, a water management expert with extensive leadership experience, joined Heriot-Watt in March as Associate Head of the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS), based at the Dubai Campus. Professor Mualla’s wealth of expertise has been gained through academic research and roles as President, most recently at the private International University for Science and Technology (IUST), and previously at the University of Damascus, the largest and oldest university in Syria, where he served for six years. His work in water management, and as a leader in Higher Education, have led to awards from the French government and the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education for his contributions to academia and scientific research.
