NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR DEVELOPMENT


The University’s first Assistant Principal for Development was appointed, with Nuala Boyle from the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) taking up the role. Nuala, who was Director of Development at UHI, has more than 20 years’ experience working in development-related areas for public sector-funded and academic establishments.


Heriot-Watt’s development is used to improve the student experience and enhance its research base and infrastructure. This new dedicated role will help to build a community of interest and supporters globally. Commenting on her appointment Nuala said: “I am delighted, honoured and excited to be appointed to this role. Investing in academic and student talent as well as teaching, research and learning spaces, and encouraging enterprising initiatives, are just some of the areas we will be concentrating on and I look forward to engaging the alumni community, businesses and other organisations in our future agenda.”

ALUMNUS ELECTED CHAIR OF IMAPS-UK


Dr Suzanne Costello, who studied her Physics undergraduate degree and her Engineering doctorate at Heriot-Watt, has been elected Chair of the UK chapter of the International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society (IMAPS). IMAPS is the largest society dedicated to the advancement and growth of microelectronics, electronics packaging and related sectors and has a global network of more than 8,000 members. Dr Costello is the first woman to hold the role of Chair.

Dr Costello, who studied with Professor Marc Desmulliez in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, is a Senior Development Scientist at MCS Ltd, Roslin, solving materials, manufacturing and reliability problems for the electronics industry. Professor Desmulliez commented: “I am delighted to see Suzanne rise so quickly in her profession and this new position highlights her as an important role model in the field of engineering, where we are striving to see women appropriately represented.”
