ATHENA SWAN PROGRESS

The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS) achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze Award following its submission in April 2015. This School award builds upon the University’s existing Bronze Award which reflects Heriot- Watt’s progress in developing a culture of equality and diversity that helps to advance the careers of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

University Athena SWAN Champion Professor Gill Hogg commented: “This award for MACS recognises its commitment and dedication to delivering positive change. It demonstrates real progress in our efforts to address issues at discipline level. All Schools are now developing submissions for an award over the next year, and across the University we have established a common sense of purpose and direction towards a more equitable workplace for all.”

University-wide activity continues apace with the delivery of unconscious bias training to senior leadership, the improving of practices and monitoring of gender balance in recruitment, improving communications surrounding promotion, development of a dedicated facility for nursing mums on the Edinburgh Campus and the reviewing of family friendly policies.

INDUSTRY INNOVATIONS IN BREWING AND DISTILLING

The 2015 Heriot-Watt Natural Selection brewing team launched a new beer ‘Bitter Descent’ – the culmination of over six months research and development. Natural Selection Brewing is a collaborative project between the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD) at the University and renowned Edinburgh brewers Stewart Brewing.

The University’s Athena SWAN programme actively develops a culture of equality and diversity to advance the careers of women in STEM subjects

‘Bitter Descent’ is an American extra special bitter and has been created into a final product by a group of ICBD MSc students. It aims to honour the classic British-style bitter but uses all- American hops. Sarah Brown, project coordinator for the Natural Selection Brewing team, said: “We’ve focused on the evolution of the American Extra Special Bitter from its humble origins, the ‘pint of bitter’ found in every real ale pub across the UK. Much like IPA, it is a style that travelled to the US and is now being brought back, but with a distinct American twist. Our beer, Bitter Descent, is balanced and very drinkable.”
