PROFESSOR ADDRESSES LONDON YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM
New student accommodation on the Edinburgh Campus
INVESTMENT IN NEW RESIDENCES
In a move to significantly improve the student experience at Heriot- Watt, a £20 million project to deliver 465 new student rooms across three new buildings is making progress on the Edinburgh Campus. Designed by architects Fletcher Joseph and constructed by Watkins Jones, the construction phase of the new residences is due to complete by June 2016.
The residences will comprise five bed flats with large bedrooms and private bathrooms and a spacious social/ kitchen/living space. There will also be a number of studios. The investment demonstrates the University’s continuing commitment to providing a high quality student experience and ensuring the campus environment is tailored to students’ needs.
Championing the future of science leadership, Heriot-Watt Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, addressed the prestigious London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in 2015. Attended by around 500 students from 65 countries, the event is aimed at progressive students of science who are likely to become the next generation of scientific leaders, innovators and pioneers. Professor Maroto-Valor holds the Robert M Buchan Chair in Sustainable Engineering and heads the Institute of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering (IMPEE).
Her lecture, entitled ‘The Energy Trilemma’, looked at the inextricable link between energy, water and food and the formidable triple challenge faced by the global community to develop technologies that can address energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability.
