EXECUTIVE REPORT continued
recruited four more trainees, two of whom are following the HAE Hire Desk Apprenticeship programme, and two fitters who are taking CITB courses at a local college.
“I am also involved with HAE’s Future Hirers initiative, which aims to promote tool and equipment hire to young people as a worthwhile career. I wrote to a number of secondary schools within our area and several invited me to speak to their students. Many knew nothing at all about our industry. I told them about the sort of kit we get involved with, the challenges we face in dealing with customers and getting equipment to their sites, and a lot of them were really interested. That is how we attracted our latest apprentices, and I plan to visit more schools and colleges in the future, to encourage people into hire.”
Continued fleet investment
Given the pace of business throughout its region, One Stop Hire continues to invest in its equipment fleet, spending £1.5m last year and with more allocated for 2017. “We recently added our 1,000th piece of Hilti equipment,” said Steve. “There has also been considerable demand for concreting equipment owing to the strength of construction activity, and we source much of this from MBW, through our local dealer, Seddons. We have bought a lot of kit from

Hire Supply Co, including lights, heaters and dehumidifiers, and we buy spares for engines and other equipment from its sister business, Midland Power Distribution. We have also been doing business with Duro, which recently wrote a guide on diamond products for us, and customers can refer to this when choosing blades and similar items.”
The sale of consumables, PPE and small tools is another growth area. A retail offering was first introduced at the company’s Blackpool depot, and this has now been rolled out at its other locations. “We have 20 fast-moving PPE items on a special display under the One Stop Essentials brand. Also, the wholesaler, North West Tools (which will be exhibiting at the Executive Hire Show for the first time) has assembled a selection of equipment from various manufacturers in a dedicated catalogue for us.”
Also proving popular is the training operation that One Stop Hire established in 2014, following its acquisition of WHS Safety Solutions in Blackburn. “It has taken time to develop this activity, appointing specialist personnel and understanding customers’ requirements, but we now offer well over 100 courses, from using abrasive wheels and managing dust, to PASMA and IPAF programmes. We also offer training at our Wrightington and Leeds depots, and this year the operation should turn over £0.5m. It is a logical add-on that opens doors, enabling us to get on to clients’ approved supplier lists, which often leads to more hire and sales business.”
