aving reliable tools that do the job are vital as an acr engineer. In fact, badly maintained tools not only hamper working, they can actually stop engineers accessing site, resulting in a wasted journey, time and therefore money.

Service and maintenance

When an acr engineer is on site, time is short and clients want to minimise the downtime for systems. Plus, there are often multiple jobs to attend, especially during the busy summer months. It is therefore vital to have good tools that are well serviced, maintained and calibrated, and to know the most eff ective way to use them.

However, engineers may delay sending tools to be serviced and maintained because they are needed on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, this can prove to be a false economy as badly maintained tools may not work as eff ectively. For example, with vacuum pumps, water can condense in the oil and prevent the pump from working effi ciently. Once the oil becomes milky the vacuum pump can only reach the vapour pressure of the water, since it is not possible to dehydrate water with water in the pump. This is a problem which will slow down a job.

Simple on-going maintenance and servicing can help ensure tools are as effi cient as possible. Some tool companies now off er expert service and repair, with a standard service complete in a fi ve-working-day turnaround in the UK. This means engineers can simply drop off a tool and pick it up from their wholesaler once servicing is complete. This service is simple, convenient and quick. For acr engineers, tools are an essential part of their day-to-day job. It is therefore vital for them to carry reliable tools in their vans. Duane Revill, UK operations manager at Javac, explains how to keep tools in tip-top condition to minimise down time.


Although having well serviced and maintained tools is vital to effi cient working, it is also essential to ensure that engineers can prove the tools are calibrated for clients, as construction sites have rules. The principal contractor’s duty is to plan, manage and monitor construction work under their control, ensuring it is carried out without risks to health and safety. These rules are essential for health and safety on site to ensure compliance with ISO or PUWER regulations. In terms of site access, this means ensuring tools have been tested and calibrated so they are not a health and safety risk. In addition to calibration, site access may also be hampered for acr engineers if tools do not comply with leak detection requirements to meet regulations such as F-gas standard BSEN-14624. It is therefore essential that engineers’ equipment meets both health and safety and leak detection requirements to help ensure access on site. Fortunately, engineers can simply take a trip to their wholesalers to deposit their tools for calibration too. Companies such as Javac are now off ering a simple, reliable service enabling engineers to drop off their tools for calibration. The tools are then returned to the wholesaler for engineer to collect.

With many companies off ering full UKAS calibration, engineers can be assured that not only will their tools be in tip-top condition ready for work on site, but they will also be able to prove it via a sticker on the tool and back-up certifi cation.

This traceable service tracks the tools on their journey to and from calibration, with the wholesaler keeping a copy of the calibration certifi cate. This means that even if an engineer arrives on site without the tool’s certifi cate, they can just call to have a copy emailed to their phone.
