EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

of expertise. We recruit from many countries and have group manufacturing sites in China, Malaysia and Italy. In one of our offices, meanwhile, we currently have 10 different languages spoken.

Working with our parent company, Daikin, we have a range of skills and knowledge that very few companies can match. John Hall, who founded the business, was very much an entrepreneur, so we have a long history of offering a diverse range of products and services to our customers.

After starting as an apprentice, I have been employed within the J&E Hall Group for more than 30 years. Like my predecessor Mark

Roberts, I began on the bottom rung and worked my way up the management ladder. J&E Hall has invested heavily in me as they have done for everyone within the company who shows an aptitude for development.

The training and the experience I gained during that time has helped along the way to prepare me for the role of managing director, and I have worked in various areas of the

business including engineering, operations, legal, health and safety, quality environmental and, latterly, HR.

The industry we work in has other challenges beyond F-Gas and we have to consider the human resource we have available. The lack of young engineers entering our sector is a major problem, and we are already facing skills shortages as the industry workforce grows older. For many years at J&E Hall we have tried to combat this with our extensive apprenticeship and graduate training programmes. We currently employ 12 apprentices and recruit graduates from across the world.

Refrigerant-wise, green alternatives to the current high GWP gases will grow in importance and customers are demanding environmentally conscious refrigerants like ammonia. 80% of our customer sites run on zero-ozone depleting ammonia and certainly in terms of a company strength we have been designing and installing ammonia systems for the best part of 80 years. Our customers are also looking for more energy efficient systems with a lower refrigerant charge. The two main drivers in the industry are legislation and our customers. We have to listen and make balanced judgments to meet the demands and the requirements of both, and I see J&E Hall being able to marry these expectations. Our employees are at the heart of

this and we have some seriously clever people working for us – not just in the fridge sector but in the electrical and chemical disciplines too. We are able to think outside the box and are not afraid to design systems that are unique to our industry. We like to find the answers to the most demanding of questions from our customers. I want to build on the achievements of my predecessor Mr Roberts. While developing our UK presence I want to see J&E Hall grow into a more international, industrial refrigeration company while continuing to work closely with our parent group, Daikin, and our customers.

J&E Hall has grown and prospered as a

refrigeration company over the past 200 years and at the core of this has been a passion for what we do. At J&E Hall we have a passion for our company and a passion for the industry. Some of our employees are still working with us after 55 years – a fantastic achievement.

The refrigeration industry is in good shape and with technological advances we can build on this to meet the F-Gas and recruitment challenges. Continual improvement is at the heart of J&E Hall as our industry moves towards reducing the environmental impact of refrigerants on the world.
