Contractors’ Corner

The JD Cooling Group has opened a new regional office in the South East, complemented with the appointment of produce storage technology specialists James Tumber and Tudor Petcu.

Mr Tumber and Mr Petcu

(previously of Tudor Multi Services), will bring comprehensive knowledge and experience in ripening room technologies, cold storage and controlled atmosphere rooms to further strengthen JD Cooling Group’s all-round services to its well- established and expanding client base. Over the last few years, Tudor Multi Services worked closely with JD Cooling Group on a number of projects and has seen first-hand the Group’s customer-led focus and aspiration to deliver the highest standards of service and installations. It was a natural move to join forces to deliver a stronger service package to clients within the South East, with the back-up of a countrywide engineering network and technical resources.

This is just one area of expansion for the Group within the past six months. Sensing a niche in the

market with the severe shortage of skilled people within the refrigeration controls field, JD Cooling Group felt that there was an opportunity to move into this sector, launching JDI Controls in early 2018. JDI Control Systems now operates

independently to support third party clients, not necessarily directly linked with the industrial refrigeration market. JDI Controls will also align with the JD Cooling Group’s visions and automation design to complete large industrial projects, in addition to the Group’s industrial service business. To provide a base for JDI Controls, the Group has opened a new regional office in Bristol, which also serves as a dedicated service hub to act as first responders to customers in the area. As advocates of local employment

and training, JD Cooling Group’s drive is to invest in local employment, training and apprentices to grow its own workforce and complement the new regional offices within the South East and South West.

Building services provider JS Wright has secured two contracts, together worth more than £8m, for one of

London’s tallest and most luxurious riverside schemes.

The contractor will supply and install the mechanical services for the Maine Tower at Galliard Homes’ prestigious Harbour Central development in Canary Wharf. The 42-storey building will comprise 299 highly specified private apartments ranging from studios to penthouses that offer panoramic views at their highest levels. It is the largest of five residential buildings in a scheme that will eventually provide 642 properties.

JS Wright will also provide the m&e services for Harbour Central’s amenity buildings incorporating two gyms, a boxing ring, yoga studio, and a cinema, as well as luxury lobbies and lounge areas.

The company, which installed the engineering infrastructure for the Maine Tower under an earlier contract, will install a low temperature hot water heating system including heat interface units in each apartment that will enable residents to receive instant domestic hot water and heating from a central plant room. JS Wright will also install a chilled

water system with risers connected to fan coil units to provide comfort cooling on demand to each property, along with a boosted cold water system with extended pipework to provide potable water. The company’s 90-week project, scheduled for completion in December 2019, will also involve the installation of a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system, which will extract stale air from each apartment and replace it with fresh incoming air, and an above-ground drainage system. JS Wright will also begin work on site this summer on its other new contract with Galliard Homes to provide the m&e services for three amenity blocks ranging in height from eight storeys to 35 storeys at Harbour Central.

The mechanical systems will

include heating and cooling with fan coil units, heat recovery ventilation, and hot and cold-water distribution. The electrical services will include power generation, lighting, fire protection and security controls. The amenities fit-out is scheduled for completion in December of this year.
