BARS AND BREWERIES
Hitachi goes to extraordinary lengths for Guinness
As one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, the Guinness Storehouse requires the highest quality heating and cooling to ensure year-round customer comfort.
L
ocated in St James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse is laid out over seven fl oors, surrounding a glass atrium in the shape of a pint of Guinness.
Its high ceilings and open plan layout meant that heat loss was originally a major problem for the site.
It was decided that an innovative combination of Hitachi’s IVX and Set Free VRF systems would meet the fundamental requirements of the site: high-performance, cost-eff ective heating and cooling, quick and effi cient installation, energy- saving operation and a long life-cycle. Leading Irish commercial refrigeration and air conditioning installers, REL Cooling Services, alongside the team at Hitachi, devised a customised solution to cater for the building’s
various and diff ering demands; with Hitachi’s IVX and Set Free VRF systems allowing up to 64 connectable indoor units to be set up with independent control – working in conjunction with several compact, low noise outdoor units.
Mindful of the building’s listed, the installers needed to protect the aesthetics of the building, keeping drilled holes to a minimum and positioning outdoor condensing units where they would not be visible to tourists or adversely aff ect the appearance of the building. Hitachi’s Set Free range off ers pipe runs up to 1000m and the IVX range has up to 100m, making the job entirely possible.
The longer pipe length and compact design of the systems allowed for a quicker and more
fl exible installation too – keeping disruption to a minimum during the installation.
Paragon Air Conditioning in Dublin is currently handling regular maintenance and equipment upgrades to ensure continued optimum air quality combined with excellent energy effi ciency. “Having welcomed approximately 14.2m visitors since its doors opened in 2000, the Guinness Storehouse is deservedly one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions,” said Robin Chandler, area sales manager – Ireland, Hitachi Air Conditioning Solutions.
With the brewer’s emphasis on quality throughout the brewing process, we’re delighted Hitachi’s quality engineered products are enabling energy-effi cient and cost-eff ective air conditioning operation year-on-year.”
