ON THE ROAD
people as well, because they can’t give them the jobs and it’s a vicious circle.
“SkillFRIDGE proves to employers that a lot of young people have great raw talent and just need someone to take them on who can train them. Those that have taken on any one of the six competitors here for example, have one of the top six young talents in the UK.” “To get young people interested in our industry, we’ve got to look at going into schools and attracting the younger children,” said Mr Creech. “The majority of people that come into the industry know someone – a friend, neighbour or family member. There are very few that come in without knowing somebody already in the industry, and we need to seek wider than that – we need to broaden our horizons. “There’s defi nitely a misconception,” he added. “Many just see the old vans and don’t realise what is involved behind that. Within our industry, we deal with electrical, plumbing and a lot of technology including controls. No matter whether you’re doing the installations or the service and maintenance, everyone needs to know about everything that we cover.”
Ian Lemmon, a technical support engineer from sponsor HRP, was present to see how it was all
going. “I think technology is increasingly on the move – the diagnostic software that is used for commission and fault fi nding appeals to the younger engineers that are interested in the IT side of things, especially the integration into building management systems,” he commented. “SkillFRIDGE is raising the bar in terms of making people aware of the industry and the full aspects of what they can be involved whether commissioning, the installation or service and maintenance.”
With regards to the changes in legislation, Mr Creech commented: “I don’t think legislation will aff ect people coming in to the industry, but this is where training organisations have all got to make sure we tighten up. We all need to make sure that those going through and getting these qualifi cations actually know what they’re doing. They have got to be properly trained before they’re given that certifi cate that says they can go out and do the work.”
“They’ve all done their companies proud,” said Mr Baillie.
“They’re all excellent,” agreed Mr Forsyth. “There’s always someone who leads at one stage
and falls at
the next stage and we always tell them that this is not a competition against each other, it’s a competition against the scorecard, so you have to focus on your own activities, not on others.
“At this point in time,” he added, “they’re around the same level with just one who is making advances – but we’re only half way through, so it’s too soon to really tell.”
