Basic principles of periodisation


Periodisation uses training cycles to vary workouts on a regular basis to avoid any plateau in progression, whilst always working towards a definite long-term goal. The two main variables in a periodised programme are volume (total quantity of training) and intensity (how hard the training is). Hence, the planning stage involves deciding how to manipulate the volume and intensity over time, then setting training cycles to achieve this in a structured way.


Volume and intensity


In general, a periodised programme begins with a high volume of low- intensity training, then over the weeks and months it progresses towards low volume high-intensity training. But this does depend upon the long-term goal.


Training cycles


In periodisation, training cycles are called macrocycles, mesocycles and microcycles, relating to the long-term, medium- term and short-term goals, respectively.
