You should be aware of the relative merits of compound and isolation lifts. Try to think beyond simply which muscle is working, and instead take into account the following:


 the specific movement (joint action and muscle contraction) used in an exercise


 the specific adaptations of the nervous system to the movement and patterns of muscle fibre recruitment within each muscle


 the fixating and stabilising demands of the exercises
