George Ferguson as independent Mayor of Bristol in 2012. He saw the potential of Bristol hosting a major sporting event, and the fact that the Tour of Britain has now been hosted twice in Bristol is very much part of his legacy to the city. Te third and fourth factors
were the Gromit Unleashed art trail in 2013 and the Shaun the Sheep trail in 2015. Both trails not only raised funds for Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity, but also raised the profile of Bristol as a lively location with lots of interesting things to see and do. Our experience of these events
has shown us that people want to be entertained and that leisure attractions are a powerful way in which to attract people to the city. At Destination Bristol we have been
working hard to get the message out to people outside the area – both at home and abroad - that Bristol is a place to visit. One of the key selling points on our website
www.visitbristol.co.uk is the huge array of events and activities in the city. Tese range from paddle boarding in the Floating Harbour, to music events such as Massive Attack on the Downs. In addition, Destination Bristol works closely with Bristol Sport to promote what they are doing, particularly with hospitality, football and rugby. We also promote all our attractions, and our range of art and cultural offerings. Destination Bristol’s conference
team is working on attracting events not just from the UK, but around Europe. Our team attend trade fairs to promote Bristol’s conference venues to conference organisers. One of the problems we have always had is not being able to offer any venues for more than 500 people. Tis is the first year that we have been able to offer a venue able to seat 1000 people for dinner at Ashton Gate Stadium. My two outstanding wishes
for Bristol have been for Rovers or City to be promoted into the Premier League, and for a five- star hotel to open in the city. With the way Bristol City have started the season we may be on the way to getting the former, and we are certainly set to get the latter with not just one five-star hotel but two being scheduled to open in Bristol – namely the Guildhall Hotel on Broad Street and another one in Temple Quay. Everything is coming together for Bristol, and we are also benefitting from the wholehearted backing of the new mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees. He understands what we do at Destination Bristol and has done his best to provide us with his support, which we very much appreciate. Te future for Bristol in these
difficult times is looking very encouraging and by working together as one team, we will undoubtedly make even more progress in the future
