Since the disastrous decision


to postpone the 2015 Rating Revaluation, there has been much uncertainty about how the 2017 Rating Revaluation will affect the regions but the message for much of the South West is that there is light at the end of the tunnel.Across much of the region, values are due to significantly fall or in some cases show modest rises, which will come as a relief to the region’s independent retailers and smaller businesses. Tese new rebased rateable values should encourage growth on high streets that have been struggling and breathe life into centres such as Newport, Gloucester and Yeovil to name but a few. Although this is good news, the government released plans this summer to reform the business

- and all but but remove the ability of business owners to appeal their rateable value and


receive a fair hearing. Te ‘Check, challenge, appeal – reforming business rates appeals – consultation on statutory implementation’ document clarifies the government’s intention to introduce its wide-ranging programme of business rates appeals reform from 1 April 2017
