Q&A
WITH EV AN WHITS ON , ONE OF O UR
NEWE S T GRAD U A TE S
What made you decide to enter the property industry? My first experience of the
property industry came about during some work experience whilst I was at school at a small practice based in Newport,
South Wales. I wasn’t there for long but the guys in the office were great and when thinking about courses for university and future career pathways they suggested the property route, which I’m thankful to them for doing so, well so far!! During my time studying Real Estate and Planning at the University of Reading they were kind enough to take me back during the holiday periods and I was able to gain some experience across a number of firms all with different specialisms within the industry. Tis enabled me to apply my course knowledge into the working environment, allowing me to grasp a greater understanding of the industry and to cement my interests within it.
What attracted you to Colliers? Te networking events - the food and drink
is outstanding! But aside from that, after being accepted on the Internship scheme last summer and working within a Colliers office for a month, the relaxed but professional environment and the work hard play hard attitude shone through and something I really wanted to be part of and presented myself with great opportunities whilst starting out in my working life.
What motivates you? To improve and doing something to the best of
my ability. Whether that be providing a service to a client, a piece of work to my line manager or carrying out a role on the rugby field!
How have you settled into Colliers after starting on the graduate scheme in September this year? Well. Te IPM team and the whole office
in general have been great. Made me feel welcome and helped me with any questions that I’ve had. It was also great taking the day out to help at Horfield Common with their wildlife projects. It gave me a great insight into what Colliers is about away from the desk, however I hope the bat boxes that we made have survived!’
You’re hosting a dinner party. Who are the three people, living or dead, you would invite and why? Firstly, Dwayne ‘Te Rock’ Johnson, I enjoy a lot of his films and bet he’s got some great stories! Secondly Warren Gatland, the Welsh rugby coach, I want to hear his ideas and tell him how we’re going to win the Lions Series and get Wales to win the next Rugby World Cup! Finally, the chef Heston Blumenthal, his food ideas are mad so hopefully I could pull his leg and get him in the kitchen!
After a busy week at Colliers, how do you like to spend your weekend? On a rugby field on a Saturday afternoon
and getting stuck into a big pub lunch on a Sunday! I find it a nice way to clear the head and relax (more Sunday!) before heading back to work Monday
