and swapped the stories of people using the underpass at Vake Park for tea, cake and postcards. Over a period of three days, talking with an astonishing range of people, from young Goths to war veterans, nannies and mothers with young children to students, and workers to dog-walkers, we discovered the richness of the culture of the underpasses, and discussed their contribution to cultural and economic life in modern Tbilisi. Te conclusion we have come to is that


spaces+people+time=cultural heritage. In numerous projects this formula has guided our


work with teachers, museum professionals, and municipal authorities, generating teaching materials, exhibitions, and tourism products for cities. More than this, we are convinced that creating and recognising the spaces in which that combination is allowed to come together and flourish is a critical factor in the making and maintaining of thriving modern cities.
