commercial hub of Abuja, a dedicated ‘Abuja Financial Centre’ will be developed. Nigerians are known internationally as big spenders and developers behind the Centenary City hope to introduce a host of international brands that are currently not available in the country, in what is to be called the Nigeria Mall. Tere will also be a new 36,000m2 amusement part complete with retail and dining options. Connectivity and internet services are being

improved to cater for the new businesses. Tere will be a constant power supply with a gas-fired 500 MW power plant connected directly to a gas terminal. Water management will ensure that 60% of water will be recycled and waste will be reduced to virtually zero, with any domestic waste being incinerated as an additional power source or used a nutrient-rich fertiliser.

STAKEHOLDERS Te Abuja Centenary City project is being developed by Eagle Hills, an Abu Dhabi-based investment company. UK company Sterling Partnership has been appointed as Legal Advisers for the $18.5 billion project and Price Waterhouse Coopers have been appointed Financial Consultants. Construction works have begun on the first phase which is expected to be completed in four years. According to the Executive Director of Eagle Hills, Mr. Jaimal Shergill, ‘Te Address and Residence’ will comprise a combination of residential and hotel spaces, spanning across 25 hectares of land with world class amenities, restaurants and more, creating 87,000 jobs. Centenary City’s self-sustaining centre is the

first such urban environment with this concept at its heart. It will be socially and economically viable and with its integrated sustainable urban planning - functional diversity, walkability and sustainable transportation, as well as environmental aspects, blue-green infrastructure, energy demand and waste management – it should be a blueprint for Africa’s cities of the future.
