elcome to the launch edition of Expert View, British Expertise’s new magazine designed to provide wide- ranging views and opinions on current

themes. As British companies continue to have huge input into high value opportunities around the world we begin by looking at cities – smart cities, green cities, heritage cities and future cities. As urban populations grow around the world, the

city’s importance becomes ever more essential to a nation’s development. Cities are much more than a collection of buildings; they are centres of business, innovation and ideas. Globalisation and improved communications mean cities are ever more connected and thus can learn and adapt together. Almost by its very nature a city throws up

complex and diverse issues that require constant innovation. Solutions come from a variety of sectors that look to work collaboratively alongside each other. Te ‘smart’ city comes up many times within these pages, and is a city which finds new ways to connect its citizens and deal with the issues of climate change, transport and health. ‘Smart’ can mean anything from the application of technology to the conservation of cultural sites, as long as it creates a liveable environment for its citizens. In Expert View we bring you opinions from

varying regions and sectors, as well as from experienced diplomats and those with bright futures ahead of them, all offering their viewpoints on cities from around the world. All this comes together to create an extensive picture of the state of cities today and what they may look like in the future. Te opinions may be as diverse as cities themselves, but they create what is surely a complete expert view. You will find pages on infrastructure,

construction, heritage and sustainability as well as supportive columns offering legal, financial and education opinions. Leading thinkers present perspectives that create a space for debate and discussion, as well as offering experience from their years in their chosen fields. I hope you will find much to stimulate your own thought processes in these pages.
