In the following sections, recommendations for developing the nutrition prescription are treated with bold and italics. The other recommendations are useful for integrating the nutrition prescription into the overall disease management plan. • Energy intake should be determined; use of indi- rect calorimetry is preferred but when not available, predictive equations can be used (see Box 2.11, page 30). After estimation of current energy needs, a rec- ommended energy intake can be developed with consideration for whether the goal is weight mainte- nance or weight loss. (LD, Consensus)2
