Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) = Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) × Physical Activity (PA) Factor Estimating RMR in overweight and obese individuals:
• If indirect calorimetry is not available, use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation: Men: RMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) – (5 × Age) + 5
Women: RMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) – (5 × Age) –161
○ Where: Weight is actual weight in kilograms, height is measured in centimeters, and age in years.
Selecting a PA factor:
• Use clinical judgment to determine the PA component of the individual’s TEE. Definitions for PA determinations are in parentheses.
Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) PA factors:
• ≥1 to < 1.4: Sedentary (reflects basal metabolism, thermic effect of food, and physical activities required for indepen- dent living)
• ≥ 1.4 to < 1.6: Low active (same as sedentary plus daily PA equivalent to walking approximately 2 miles/d at 15–20 min/mile or an equivalent amount of other moderate- intensity activities, such as golfing without a cart, raking leaves, vigorous housework or gardening, or taking a low-im- pact aerobics class)
• ≥ 1.6 to < 1.9: Active (same as sedentary plus daily PA equival- ent to approximately 105 min of moderate-intensity activities or 70 min of vigorous-intensity activities, such as bicycle rid- ing, tennis, or jogging)
• ≥ 1.9 to < 2.5: Very active (same as sedentary plus daily PA equivalent to approximately 250 min of moderate-intensity physical activities or 160 min of vigorous-intensity activities)
