I rent a one-bedroom apartment in a large complex. My monthly water bill is allocated based on the square footage I occupy, but the amount keeps going up, even though I use very little water. What gives?—Linda, Wicker Park Check if they have water meters installed. Chicago uses an archaic method to calculate water usage based on square footage and the number of sinks and toilets in a residence. e HOME HACK: Closet deep clean
Love it or leave it. If you don’t adore the items taking up precious real estate in your closet, it’s time to say goodbye. Switch to matching, slim-line velvet hangers, and use bins to ensure clutter stays contained. Maximize closet height with a space-saver system from Ikea or the Container Store, and tuck your shoes away neatly onto shelves, or fill up a basket with the toes pointed down. Take your organization to the next level by labeling storage bins and containers to eliminate the time it takes to remember what is where. —Brooke Ruder, NEAT Method (847-525-6556,

Who is responsible for mowing the lawn, me or my landlord? Sometimes she lets it go so long that I borrow my neighbor’s mower just to keep from being embarrassed.—Will, Irving Park That would be your landlord, unless it’s specifically detailed as your job in the lease or rental contract. You should contact your landlord about this issue. You may even be able to negotiate a discount in rent if you offer to help with that task.
