You don’t have to pay sky-high prices to live in the clouds. By Nick Kotecki

he Marina City towers aren’t the tallest in Chicago, but the “corncobs” make a strong case for being among the most beautiful. What a view!

The pair of buildings designed by Bertrand Goldberg is well on its way to being designated an official city landmark, making life in these storied towers a mix of privilege and stewardship. Many of the apartments in the buildings belong to resident condo owners, but a few lucky Chicagoans are able to nab a rental every year. Who knew beauty could be so cheap? The 36th-floor studio apartment pictured here costs just $1,590 per month. The unit is cone-shaped, tapering outward to a panoramic 18-foot bank of floor- to-ceiling windows that give way to a spacious balcony overlooking the

river. The sleek, open-concept space comes with a mix of dark hardwood and carpeted floors. Permanent fixtures like the bank of white laminated cabinets and integrated appliances in the kitchen, as well as the slate-gray tile and walk-in shower in the bathroom, give a distinctly contemporary feel.

Marina City also has one- bedrooms for as low as about $1,700 per month. The buildings feature on-site laundry facilities, a dry cleaner, a fitness room, bike storage, rooftop access and on-site Zipcars.

Marina City is home to nearly 900 units. If you keep an eye out, the next opening could be yours. For more information, contact Alto Realty (312-222-1111, marina-city.com)
