Goddess and the Baker

Food crawl Navy Pier

It’s long been known as a tourist trap, but Navy Pier (navypier.com) is making a big play for some local love. The lakefront destination (see page 8) is putting up a new (and even larger) Ferris wheel and adding a 13-acre park with two performance spaces. Plus, you can find new fast-casual restaurants (see ya later, Auntie Anne’s, America’s Dog and McDonald’s) that offer great options for coffee and lunch, making the trip all the more appealing. Here’s where you’ll find us spending a little more time this spring at Navy Pier.

Looking for well executed fried chicken? This new joint serves “spicy” or “original” pieces of bird with super crisp skin and plump juicy meat that is so damn tasty, you won’t even need to dip them in buffalo sauce. The fries perfectly accompany the messy (but delicious) meal. If getting your hands dirty isn’t your thing, get

The folks behind the counter here use the by-the-pintful favorite’s ice cream to transform smoothies and banana splits into magical concoctions. Get any flavor in sundae form, topped with hot fudge and whipped cream, or do it like we do and order a waffle cone. 600 E Grand Ave (312-836-0992, benjerry.com)

Chef’s Table Iliana Regan

When the chef-owner of Michelin- starred Elizabeth (4835 N Western Ave), Bunny, the Micro Bakery (2928 N Broadway St) and the in-progress Kitsune, a casual Japanese spot in Lincoln Square (4229 N Lincoln Ave), goes out, it’s often to an old favorite. Here’s where you might spot Iliana Regan when service is over.

IN ANDERSONVILLE You’ll find her at Anteprima (5316 N Clark St) for the octopus salad appetizer or fresh pasta; the mostly vegetarian Kopi A Travelers

FOR A PICK-ME-UP

“I drink coffee in the morning and tea in the evening,” says Regan. “In the evenings I drink jasmine blossom from Rare Tea Cellar (3701 N Ravenswood Ave).”

WHEN PASTRY CALLS “I love bread,” she says, adding that Bunny’s offerings change daily and range from boule to black bread, sourdough and brioche. “But I love Baker Miller (4610 N Western Ave) and Cellar Door Provisions (3025 W Diversey Ave).” —Maggie Hennessy

DMK Burger Bar and Fish Bar

The local restaurant group brings its signature burgers and tacos to Navy Pier so you can finally enjoy them under the same roof. Technically, the Fish Bar occupies its own bar area, but DMK combined the restaurant so you can grab both shrimp tacos and the number four burger (with roasted hatch chili, a fried egg, Sonoma jack cheese and smoked bacon) at the same spot. Double win: There’s also a long list of craft beers and cocktails, upping Navy Pier’s alcohol game considerably. 600 E Grand Ave (312-624-8017, dmkburgerbar.com)

5 Porkchop

For perhaps the meatiest meal you can get at the Pier, head to Porkchop and chow down on the pulled pork sandwich. You’ll get a generous heap of meat with tasty tomato barbecue sauce on top, all packed inside a chewy pretzel bun. If you’re especially hungry, grab sides like fries and a pop to drink. 600 E Grand Ave (chicagoporkchop.com) —Elizabeth Atkinson
