10 QUESTIONS
10 QUESTIONS WITH... CHRISTIAN HARRIS
Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Christian Harris, Commercial Director at Bonasystems.
(competitiveness) and clients’ fault that the balance is currently too far the other way.
Q6 Q1
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first ever job was over
summer breaks from school, working as a builder’s labourer with my dad’s company (anyone that knows me well probably won’t believe that!).

Q5
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
Over lunch! I met with Steven Phillips, Bonasystems’ MD, to discuss some business ideas that I had and we got talking about Bonasystems. I was intrigued by what the company did, particularly in the field of solving slipping accidents. And it’s been onwards ever since.
WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR
PERSONALITY? Confident, measured, driven.
IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,
WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? I’d love to go to the Galapagos Islands. I think it would be the most spectacular trip to a place that the vast majority of people simply aren’t lucky enough to visit.
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING
INDUSTRY? A greater focus on value rather than price. It’s both the industry

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,
WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Listen! When I started work I thought I was better, cleverer and more skilled than I really was – learn from those that know what they are doing.
IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD
YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I’d love to have a house in Positano, where I got married. I’d also be keen to turn myself from a multi-millionaire to just being rich by investing in my local football club: Kettering Town. Finally, I’d buy a plane!
Q8
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE
ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Warren Buffett to learn from arguably the world’s greatest businessman, Winston Churchill to meet the most distinguished of my fellow RAC Club members, and Vince McMahon as I’m (still) a closet WWE fan.
Q9
WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE
CLEANING INDUSTRY? Hopefully as I’ve alluded to above, it can add some more value in what it does. I can see some consolidation within large client estates (like City FM does for Asda): I feel that in a partnership approach like this the client gets the most out of the relationship, whereas in multiple-contractor relationships it’s mostly about one-upmanship and not value creation.
Stephen Whittall, Group Operations Manager at Airdri Ltd, asks...
Q10
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING
YOU’VE EVER DONE (EITHER IN WORK OR AT HOME)? I set up what was at the time (2004) the largest-ever poker tournament in Europe, which took some organising, particularly since it was in my final year at university!
