the way that we treat our workforce and our colleagues. We’ve always focused as a family business – we’re a very large organisation but we’re still family-owned – so as a consequence of that family ownership I think we have always had a very clear approach to how we would treat people that work within our business. They are colleagues, they’re not employees, And we make sure that we motivate them by making sure they have the correct uniform, they have enough uniform that they can wear clean clothes every day of the week, that they have proper payment, that they have appropriate machinery that works, that they have adequate training, they have all of the access to employment rights that you would expect to have, that they have considerate management and supervision, that take care of them and don’t abuse them in any way. So all of those things that, as I say, we would all consider to be fairly standard expectations, we make sure that they have those.


TC: How has the Taskforce gone about getting the word out there and encouraging others to adopt best practices?


PS: What we’ve produced is a range of products – a poster campaign, a postcard campaign and a booklet – that will highlight the cleaner to members of the general public, whether they’re in a public space, whether they’re in an office environment, there are posters there that can show people where the cleaner is.


We also have postcards that have a very clear reference to the basic expectations and basic rights that the cleaners should have from their employer, and then we have a handbook which will also take them through the employment rights and expectations that a cleaner should have from the company that they work for.


I think that this is going to have a massive impact on the industry because where there are reputable companies that have that procedure in place already and are doing a great job, there are a number of other workers that are slipping through the net of good working practice and are being left exposed with no form of recourse.
