So it seems that an increasing number of washroom providers


are making their toilets


quirky, funny and surprising.


But do we really want to be challenged, embarrassed, disconcerted or frightened when visiting the loo? Surely what we really seek are clean, safe facilities


Visitors can admire the beach murals, fake lighthouse and picket fence and then be soothed by the sounds of seagulls calling and waves breaking on to a far-off shore.


Perhaps quirky washrooms are simply part of the culture in the Netherlands. After all they did open a “talking toilet” in 2004 that reminded washroom visitors at an Amsterdam cultural centre to wash their hands and avoid smoking on the premises.


Strange toilets are certainly in the culture of Japan where high-tech lavatories are common and where built-in amenities such as a heated seat and integral bidet are the norm.

This summer saw the advent of a new venture in the UK designed to offer simply that: spotlessly clean washrooms manned by attendants and supplied with all the necessary amenities.


London’s first 2theloo in Covent Garden provides shoppers and sightseers with access to clean toilets in a busy area of the city where public conveniences are few and far between. For the sum of 70p – little more than the cost of using a washroom at any London station –


visitors have access to clean, smart washrooms equipped throughout with Tork hygiene products. Some of the cubicles are quirkily themed on their Covent Garden surroundings, it’s true, but the emphasis is very much on high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.


There may be washroom visitors out there who relish the prospect of ghostly figures appearing in their mirror. They might also like the idea of relieving themselves in a see-through cubicle that makes them feel spied upon. But most of us would probably prefer to be pleasantly surprised by the facilities we encounter.
