2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS 55
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
The biggest challenge is to continue to challenge myself. I’ve faced many new situations in the workplace and every time it has been a positive step forward. Taking on new experiences is essential for growth and expands one’s level of expertise. Yet, it’s still unsettling to step outside of my comfort zone and venture into unfamiliar territory.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?
That’s really hard to say because I was very young when the decision was made to focus on business. However, my other passion is dancing so possibly a professional dancer. I started ballet at four, and have tried various forms of dance over the years. For 2015, my goal was to learn Salsa, which I have enjoyed thus far. ■
Pamela Warren
Job: Assistant vice president, portfolio manager, fixed income Company: Butterfield Career path
2007—Joined Butterfield
Pamela Warren joined Butterfield Asset Management in 2007 and is responsible for managing the US, sterling, and Canadian classes of the Butterfield money market fund. She is a member of Butterfield’s Investment Councils charged with the formulation of ongoing investment strategy. Prior to joining the bank, she worked at HSBC Bermuda as a portfolio accountant on the HSBC corporate money funds. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Finance (Honors) from Hampton University and is currently pursuing her CFA designation.
Warren is responsible for managing the Butterfield money market
fund with assets in excess of $1.5 billion. This role includes making the daily investment decisions, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and in-house guidelines, and also attending board meetings and AGMs related to this fund.
Why did you choose to work in this industry initially?
My father directed my attention toward a career in finance. He suggested that I become a stockbroker because he surmised that job matched well with my strengths. I discovered I did have genuine interest when I majored in Finance in university and now Butterfield has afforded me the chance to work in a position directly related to my degree.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
One of the highlights was the opportunity to work in Butterfield’s Cayman office for three months. Not only was it fantastic to meet colleagues outside of Bermuda, but it also broadened my knowledge of fixed income. I was able to take the skills I learned while there and apply it to my work here.
“I’ve faced many new situations in the workplace and every time it has been a positive step forward.”
