2015 38 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS
When I returned to the Island I accepted a position with OIL, the
mutual for energy companies, as an insurance analyst. I then moved into broking with J&H and Marsh in Bermuda and subsequently London where I transitioned into healthcare underwriting.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I have been fortunate throughout my career to work for people who have not only managed me but taught me, challenged me and encouraged me to grow. Judy Hart is one of those individuals and among many accomplishments, she can be credited with kick-starting the growth of the healthcare liability market in Bermuda upon her arrival at Endurance in 2002. I worked with Judy for 10 years and on her retirement assumed the Bermuda healthcare practice leader role which has been the highlight of my career thus far.

Kim Morgan is a senior vice president and Bermuda healthcare practice leader for Endurance Insurance. She has 24 years of industry experience, including 12 years as an underwriter with Endurance. Prior to joining Endurance in January 2003, she was a broker with J&H Intermediaries and subsequently Marsh in Bermuda, as well as London.
Morgan is past president of the Bermuda chapter of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM).
Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? Having grown up in Bermuda where most of my family worked for different insurance firms, my initial thought on career path was ‘anything but insurance’. I majored in international relations at Tufts University and enjoyed political science and French. Upon graduation however I wasn’t keen to return home immediately and was very fortunate to get an internship with Boston-based Plymouth Rock Insurance. I jumped at the opportunity and soon found myself negotiating subrogation claims in the auto division, which was quite an experience if you know anything about Boston drivers! While it was a short-term position, it provided me great insight in to the many possibilities within the insurance world and particularly those I was fortunate to have on my doorstep in Bermuda.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
In 2000, with the help of several people at Marsh, notably John Geisbush, Bill Malloy and Paul Moody, I was able to secure a transfer to its London office healthcare division. For eight years I was primarily a D&O/E&O broker and in effect switched product specialties to handle healthcare liability. Initially, I had to learn a new product, new clients, new brokers, new underwriters, and the nuances of the London market—the latter perhaps being the most challenging with few women, the face-to-face nature of conducting business and often having to queue for hours to see certain underwriters at Lloyd’s only to be told to go away and come back when I could better answer their questions.
It didn’t take long before I learned to make sure I was as well prepared
as possible before I ventured off again for that face-to-face encounter at Lloyd’s. I was in London for three years and from that foundation I continued to build my career in Bermuda in the healthcare space. Those initial steps back ultimately have been the very same that helped to propel me forward to my position today. I am extremely thankful for that experience and those who allowed me that opportunity.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?
If I had chosen a different profession, it would have been law. As mentioned, I was an international relations major and enjoyed political science. ■
