To celebrate the success of women on Bermuda, Bermuda:Re+ILS profiled nearly 40 women in the re/insurance industry who have smashed through the gender glass ceiling, asking them how they entered the industry, the challenges they have faced and what they still want to achieve.
Kathleen Reardon, CEO, Hamilton Re, who mentors the younger women on her staff, is a co-founder and chair of Women in Reinsurance (WiRe) in Bermuda and devotes volunteer time to providing networking and professional development opportunities for women in the reinsurance industry.
She says that being part of a startup company has held a multitude of challenges for her.
“Working for a startup company has a unique set of challenges including building a portfolio of business from scratch. It has been the most challenging, but also most rewarding experience of my career. The learning opportunities are numerous,” she says.
Peta White, managing director, head of North America property reinsurance, Markel Global Reinsurance, highlights her biggest achievement as being selected as co-head of global reinsurance operations for the Bermuda office, alongside Andrew Barnard.
“It’s going to be a challenging and demanding role but I’m excited about leading a great team of people as we continue to compete as a key player in today’s global reinsurance market,” she says.
It is evident from the comments gained for the supplement that many women on the Island feel passionately about helping other women reach their goals.
Laura Taylor, principal and chief financial officer, Nephila Capital, says: “The number of women in these industries continues to grow which is great to see, but retention is still a challenge. I know many women in the industry believe we have a responsibility to support the next generation, whether it is in this industry or another, and they are doing what they can to make a difference.”

Flying the flag for women
Editor’s note
As a leading insurance hub and well- regarded innovator in the sector, Bermuda plays host to some of the leading female senior executives in the industry.
W
hile men have historically dominated the insurance industry, there has been a particular drive in recent years to encourage women to strive for senior positions. The most prominent hire so far has been the appointment of Inga Beale as CEO of Lloyd’s—a 325-year-old
institution with a strong history of being a place for men.
