2015 32 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS

reinsurance startups. It’s always a challenge to come in at ground zero. There are typically no pricing or reserving models, often no real claims or accounting systems. It’s very difficult but extremely rewarding to build all of the necessary actuarial models and to work with a team to get all systems set up and running smoothly. Creative problem-solving skills are a must

If you had chosen a different path what would it have been?

I studied architecture for a while in school. I will always wonder what would have happened if I had taken that path. ■

Jennifer Kish

Job: Senior vice president & chief actuary Company: JRG Reinsurance Career path

2013—Senior vice president & chief actuary, JRG Reinsurance

Jennifer Kish joined JRG Reinsurance as chief actuary in September 2013. She has over 20 years of experience as a pricing and reserving actuary in the US and Bermuda. Prior to joining JRG Reinsurance, Kish has held senior actuarial positions at Torus Reinsurance, Arch Reinsurance company, and Transatlantic Reinsurance company (now TransRe).

She is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, with degrees from MIT, Yale University, and the NYU Stern School of Business.

Why did you choose to work in the industry initially?

I’ve always loved a challenge. Reinsurance is probably the most difficult area of practice for an actuary as it involves the analysis of often very complex risks in a dynamic, fast-changing environment. I also like the more “social” aspects: Working in reinsurance involves building strong working relationships with underwriters, brokers, and clients. It’s not at all a “back-office” role.

What has been the highlight of your career?

Living and working in Bermuda for five years has been one of the highlights. It’s been fascinating to work in a very close-knit international community of reinsurance professionals. I don’t have to explain to anyone what an actuary does any more.

I love my current role at JRG Reinsurance. We’ve got a fantastic

team of talented people extremely focused on creating value for our shareholders.
