2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS 23

decision to come and work in Bermuda. When I arrived on the Island, insurance was clearly the growth sector and I very much wanted to be a part of that.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

In the most general sense, I have been very fortunate in having constant opportunities to develop professionally and personally and to be part of an industry that was constantly reinventing itself. Specifically, a highlight was to be nominated as a member of “100 Women/100 Visions” in 2012.

What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered? Caroline Foulger

Job: BDA board chair, member of Institute of Directors, former PwC partner, director at Hiscox and Butterfield Bank Career path

2013—Independent non-executive director, Hiscox 2013—Independent non-executive director, Butterfield Bank 2013—Independent non-executive chair, Bermuda BDA 2000—Partner and insurance leader, PwC 1994—Joined PwC

Caroline Foulger is an independent non-executive director in the financial services industry. She currently sits on the board of several companies, including Hiscox, a FTSE 250 company and two of its subsidiaries—its Lloyds’ Syndicate and its Bermuda Class IV reinsurer; Butterfield Bank, a Bermuda Stock Exchange-listed bank; and a Bermuda run-off property & casualty reinsurer funded by private equity.

Foulger was a partner with PwC Bermuda until December 31,

2012, when she retired from the partnership to begin a portfolio non- executive career. She led PwC’s Bermuda insurance and reinsurance industry practice from 2004 to 2012 and its Bermuda government and public sector practice in 2011 and 2012.

While at PwC, until 2012, she led the audit and consulting relationships with many of the US or UK-listed insurance and reinsurance clients headquartered from Bermuda with worldwide operations. One of her key consulting projects in 2011–12 was assisting the government in the formation of what is now the Bermuda Development Agency. She has been chair since December 2013.

Foulger is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants

in England and Wales, a member of the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Bermuda, and a member of the Institute of Directors. She is a graduate of the University of London, UK.

Why did you choose to work in this industry initially? My decision to work in the insurance industry was a function of my

Learning when to ask for professional help and support from colleagues rather than trying to be a superstar and doing it all. I succeeded eventually, but it took quite a few years.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?

My drivers are intellectual stimulation and mentoring and developing others. I would have very much enjoyed working in academia I believe. ■
